What is Magic Mouthwash?

Magic Mouthwash is a compounded medication prescribed by a doctor to treat pain and inflammation in the mouth.

A number of ingredients can be used depending on the specific needs of a patient, but there are certain formulations that tend to be the most commonly prescribed. At Undefined Health, we offer two formulations that are very common in our experience, and we also offer custom compounded formulations.

What is Magic Mouthwash used for?

Magic Mouthwash is generally used to treat sores or inflammation in your mouth esophagus (food pipe).

It can also be used to treat certain infections in the mouth.

How to use Magic Mouthwash?

Magic Mouthwash should be used as prescribed, but general guidelines include:

  • Swish and spit: typically, 1-2 teaspoons is swished around the mouth for 1-2 minutes and then spit out; however, sometimes it is recommended to swallow the product if there are sores in the throat.
  • Every 4-6 hours: the product is typically used every 4-6 hours, depending on the severity of the symptoms.
  • Avoid Eating & Drinking: avoid eating and drinking at least 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after using the mouthwash to allow the medication to take full effect.

What are the side effects?

As with many medications, Magic Mouthwash can have side effects, but they generally tend to be minor and far outweighed by the significant relief felt from using the product. Side effects may include:

  • Numbness: local anesthetics, such as lidocaine, are frequently used to help relieve pain, which leads to temporary numbness in the mouth and throat.
  • Swallowing Difficulties: Numbness in the mouth and throat can interfere with swallowing.
