Common uses of Magic Mouthwash

Magic Mouthwash can be used to treat various oral conditions including:

Oral Mucositis: most commonly seen in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

  • Canker Sores (Aphthous Ulcers): small lesions in the mouth, which can be caused by stress, dietary deficiencies, menstrual periods, hormonal changes, allergies, and trauma.
  • Oral Thrush: a fungal infection resulting in painful white patches in the mouth often caused by antibiotics and immune system problems.
  • Lichen Planus: an inflammatory condition affecting the skin and mucous membranes. 

Ingredients used in Magic Mouthwash

We offer 2 "off-the-shelf" formulations that are most common in our experience:

  1. Magic Mouthwash 3 - a 1:1:1 formulation of: Viscous Lidocaine 2% + Diphenhydramine 12.5mg/5mL Elixir + Alumina, Magnesia, and Simethicone Oral Susp. USP
  2. Magic Mouthwash 5 - a 1:1:1:1:1 formulation of: Viscous Lidocaine 2% + Diphenhydramine 12.5mg/5mL Elixir + Alumina, Magnesia, and Simethicone Oral Susp. USP + Nystatin Oral Susp. 100,000 U/mL + Dexamethasone 0.5mg/5mL Elixir

Swish-and-Spit or Swish-and-Swallow?

Swish-and-swallow is preferred when treating deeper in the oropharyngeal cavity or the esophagus; otherwise, swish-and-spit is preferred to limit systemic exposure.

Recommended dosing

We recommend 1-2 teaspoons every 4-6 hours as needed
